Why should I have my hearing aids checked over every 6 months?

Regular Hearing Aid check-ups are essential in ensuring that your hearing aids perform to their maximum ability.

Hearing aids are complex electronic instruments and they need to be treated sensitively. Good quality hearing aids should last for at least 5 years. However, this lifespan assumes that they receive regular attention to ensure optimum performance, and that any ‘misbehaviour’ issues are addressed swiftly.

We get used to popping them into our ears everyday and generally think little about them. But think about it for a moment. The ear holds a fairly consistent temperature of between 36.1 and 37.2°c, with humidity that can be anything from between 40 – 70%. And along with that is the presence of ear wax. Not exactly an ideal environment for sensitive electronic instruments! Under these conditions it’s no wonder that from time to time problems can occur.

Prevention is better than cure.

As a hearing aid user it is important to keep your hearing aids in tip top condition by cleaning them every day. Keeping them clean helps them function correctly. However, there comes a time when they will need to be professionally cleaned and performance checked.

At Click Hearing we recommend a hearing aid follow up every 6 months.

Look, Clean and Test

Our hearing aid follow up appointment will allow us to take a thorough look inside your ears using a video otoscope, essentially a camera that looks deep into your ear canal. This allows us to identify any serious wax blockages or other abnormalities.

We will deep clean your hearing aids, removing the 6 months of earwax, dirt, sweat and dust that home cleaning cannot easily remove. We will also test and listen to your aids for any anomalies, such as a weak output or background noises, along with any physical issues that we can easily rectify.

And while you are with us this is an ideal time for us to ensure that the hearing aid software programming is all up to date and working to your needs.

So, in short a 6 month check up will help to keep your hearing aids in top condition and help them to do their job for longer. It is also an opportunity to check the health of your ears and discuss any other issues or concerns you have about your hearing, tinnitus or balance.

Perhaps the question isn’t why should you have a 6 month check up, but why WOULDN’T you.
