Walking and balance is a complex activity which, for most of our life, we take for granted. Our brains use information from our eyes, sensors in our muscles and joints and signals from the balance organs in our ears to keep us up-right and steady.

What causes balance problems?

Balance problems can occur if these signals from our balance organs change, often causing symptoms such as:
dizziness when moving your head or body
a spinning sensation when looking up or turning over in bed
veering off in one direction when walking
difficulty with visual stability when moving your head or body

Basic Investigation

An initial one hour consultation where we will use special screening equipment to test and check for any obvious inner ear balance disorder.

In the case of where BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, more information below) is evident we will perform a treatment manoeuvre.

Advanced Investigation

Where further investigation is required we can arrange for further comprehensive diagnostic testing to test further parts of your balance organ if required.

We will make all relevant onward referrals where appropriate and place you in our bespoke vestibular rehabilitation programme.

This programme is designed to help you take back control of your symptoms and restore your quality of life.

Vestibular rehabilitation is aimed at using the brain’s compensation mechanism to reduce the negative effects of an inner ear balance disorder. This would involve a carefully curated set of exercises and lifestyle modifications to bring out the best in you.
An initial introductory session of 1 hour is offered that sets out the program and related set up exercises with a further three 30 minute sessions over a 6 month period.

Our Balance Tests

The selection of tests depends on various factors carefully considered by our specialised audiologists. We perform a range of tests mentioned below to give you the best information.

Caloric Test

This is a gold standard test to identify impaired balance function in either ear. Warm and cool air is used to measure responses.

Video head Impulse Testing (vHIT)

This is a quick test to identify only acute balance impairment in either ear, commonly used in our screening appointments. Goggles with accelerometers are used to measure responses.

Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (cVEMP)

This test is used to identify impairment in function in a part of our balance organ which is responsible for linear up and down motion. Responses to this test are measured from neck muscles.

Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (oVEMP)

This test is used to identify impairment in function in a part of our balance organ which is responsible for linear to and fro motion. Responses to this test are measured from eye muscles.

Kinetic Rotational Chair Testing

This is a gold standard test to identify impairment in both ears simultaneously.

Audiometry (Tone or Speech) hearing test

Using tones of varying frequencies and volumes, this test provides us with an evaluation of your sense of hearing and is carried out in a sound proof booth for the most accurate measurements.

Tympanometry test

This test is often carried out in conjunction with audiometry and is used to assess the function of the middle ear. We can also provide ipsi & contralateral reflexes and decay on request.

Videonystagmography (VNG)

This test is used to identify impaired function in the balance centres in the brain with the use of goggles and eye movement tasks.

Very friendly staff. Quick service. Very informative and useful feedback. The professional took her time explaining everything so I understood everything. Painless and super effective. Amazing. Next day booking and plenty of time slots. The receptionist was very friendly, clean and nice waiting room and the lady who did my ear-wax removal was brilliant. Everything was explained, I got to see what was happening and the session itself took no more than 20 mins. I feel like i’ve got a completely new ear! Would 100% recommend and used again. It’s £75 for two ears (even if you only have one doing) but it’s totally worth it!

Went to the Ramsden Heath branch and had my ears cleared by Ben on the 3rd of January.An utmost professional approach and diagnosis with a painless procedure.I couldn't recommend Ben highly enough had the added hearing test which again was excellent with a report sent by email.At last I've found someone who I can totally say is the best in the business.

I went in for 'vestibular function tests'. The audiologist was excellent. Very personable and friendly. She kept me informed in straightforward, non-jargon language and I felt by the end of it all that I understood what had just happened and what it all meant, rather than just having experienced some sort of arcane medical experiment. Extremely easy to book. I loved being able to see inside my ear after years of ear treatment. The staff were friendly, the service very quick and all in all a fabulous experience. I had the micro suction and won't hesitate to return for it again, along with when I need a hearing aid.
